What is a Social Network?
A social network is a website which builds online communities of like-minded people. Typically a social network site helps people who share interests, activities or hobbies to communicate. Social network sites provide simple ways for people to interact via public bulletin boards, e-mail and instant messaging. myspace. myspace is similar to facebook, but has a slant towards music as a common interest area. Most popular bands and solo artists now have a MySpace page. With 110 million users, myspace is the current largest social network.
bebo. An alternative to myspace, bebo is based out of the US, but has gained popularity as the social network of choice in the Ireland and the UK. It is now more popular in Ireland and the UK than myspace.
LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a social network for use in a business context. Users pages are focused on their professional career and allows the user to specify interest in business opportunities, jobs, etc. It provided facilities for finding and connecting to former colleagues.

These social networking sites offer a number of opportunities for businesses. There are a number of features of these sites that can be utilised for business.
Advertising. All of the social websites make their revenues through advertising. Due to the nature of the sites, demographic data is very accurate and so advertising can be targeted very effectively. In addition to basic demographic data such as age and gender, social sites have information on hobbies, interests and geographic location ensuring that advertising spend is aimed at a very specific audience.
